Get assessed and, if needed, prescribed medicine for short-term problems without waiting for a GP appointment
Independent Prescribing gives you access to treatment for short-term health problems without waiting for a doctor's appointment. It is a service provided by NHS Wales. Our pharmacist at Porthcawl Pharmacy has completed further training, which means they can assess your symptoms, diagnose acute conditions and prescribe medicines directly where they are needed.
What we can help with
Our prescribing pharmacist can look at a range of immediate health concerns, including:
- Urinary tract infections — antibiotics can be provided if needed, following a urine test
- Ear problems — including ear infections and a build-up of ear wax
- Skin conditions — such as rashes, eczema and minor skin infections
What happens at your appointment
You will be seen in our private consultation room. The pharmacist will talk through your symptoms and medical history, then examine or test you as needed to reach a diagnosis.
If a medicine is appropriate, they will prescribe it there and then. If your condition needs further attention, they will refer you to your GP or another healthcare professional. Where it is helpful, the pharmacist may ask you to come back for a follow-up, to check your symptoms have fully settled.
Why patients choose this service
It is a quicker route to treatment, close to home, with time taken to understand your symptoms and tailor your care. Support is offered from diagnosis through to prescription and follow-up.
To arrange an appointment, call us or pop into the pharmacy and speak to a member of the team.
